Things You'll Need:
- A bagpipe
- Money
-
Step 1
Find a high quality shop that will sell you quality items to make your playing experience as enjoyable as possible.
-
Step 2
When you find your shop you will notice you can choose between the shuttle pipe, which is ideal for beginners, or you can choose to purchase the great Highland Bagpipe. When you choose either of these instruments fit may not be exactly perfect. In the past pipers would simply have to deal with an uncomfortably sized blow piece, but this is not necessarily true anymore.
-
Step 3
One way to get the right size blow pipe is to get some professional advice from the shop. Determine the correct size by holding the instrument where the best place for the hole in the blowpipe stock would be. Do this exercise again when the blowpipe is tied into the bag. The problem with this technique is that when you do this you will usually find the correct size based on what you need when you are standing up. This can prove uncomfortable if you need or want to play sitting down.

Step 4
If you want to get the most flexibility out of your blowpipe, you may want to look into some of the flexible options out there. Many manufacturers of blowpipes are now offering telescoping blowpipes that sound just as great as the blowpipe stock that has always been used. If you are just starting out you may find some of the junior blowpipes offer you the right size or you can go with some of the adjustable blowpipes that are made for someone who has experience. Many times these blow pipes are adjustable from about eight inches to over 10 inches, so your height and body position can always be accounted for. Many of these blowpipes also allow for a 45 degree arc in any direction for your playing comfort
