Even the cleanest showers can get hard water buildup over time. And it can be kind of disgusting when you're showering and you look up at the shower head and it's covered in hard water deposits. Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Vinegar
  • Freezer bag
  • Scrub brush
  • Plastic grocery bag (optional)

Instructions

      Remove your shower head with the pliers. Most shower heads are removable, and it just requires turning the nut counterclockwise. You might even be able to do it by hand.

      Place the shower head into the freezer bag with the buildup side down.

      Fill the bag with the vinegar until the buildup areas of the shower head are completely covered. Let it soak for at least six to eight hours, or overnight if possible.

      Check to see if the buildup is easily removed. Let it soak longer if needed. The buildup should come off with just a little scrubbing and a good rinse in clean water.

      Rinse well and reattach.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot remove the shower head, place the freezer bag into a plastic grocery bag. You can use the grocery bag to tie the vinegar bag in place.

  • If the shower head is metal, you might want to check it sooner to make sure the acid from the vinegar hasn't damaged the metal plating.
