How to potty train your new pup using treats and a kennel. It works!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Kennel that will properly grow with your pup.
  • Treats
  • A leash, collar
  1. Step 1

Before you EVER bring that new puppy home, make sure that you are ready to invest in to his/her potty training needs. Plus, pups like babies need attention when it comes to potty time. They can't tell you yet when they need to go, so you'll be up and down during the first few weeks while they are in the house roaming taking them out every 30 mins. I am telling what worked for me. As a New Owner of a Boxer and had never owned a puppy before, I heard a kennel worked. So here is the steps that worked for me and my Boxer, ACE.

Step 1. Buy a Kennel large enough for your pup to grow into. When buying this kennel, make sure that is has a removable panel that can size the kennel down so that the pup will not have the "Whole" thing to sleep in. Only use the kennel for sleeping. This should not be used for punishment. I never had to lay a hand on my puppy to train him to potty outside. When using the kennel to train, pups will not urine or poop in the kennel because they don't like to lay in it. Now having said that, Ace did have a few accidents a first but over a couple days of staying there over night and during the day while at work he got used to HOLDING IT.
    a. Give your pup a treat to coax him into the kennel. Every time you want him/her to go into the kennel give them a treat. I say, "Great, Ace".
    b. DON'T use puppy pads to line the kennel, use old blankets or towels. You will be washing them daily till he/she learns to hold it.

  2. Step 2

Once you have the kennel and sized, buy a collar that fits and will grow with the pup and a leash.
    c. Whenever you get up in the morning, take the puppy outside on the leash. Try to take pup out the same time everyday and to the same place in the yard.
    d. Exercise by walking helps the pup poop as well as sniffing. But lil pups don't need alot of walking just yet. So, keep them to the length of the leash.

  3. Step 3

TREAT TIME. Once he/she poos/pees outside give them a treat EVERYTIME and PRAISE them. I say, "Good Potty, Ace". They love the praise and the treats.

If after the potty time is over and you need to go to work, kennel your pup with a treat. Continue the potty outside step and then keep your eye on him/her while they are out in the house.

I never allowed my pup into no more than two rooms of house. If you can put up child gates, do. This will keep the accidents to only a few areas.

If your pup should make an accident, DON'T spank, just clean it up and take him/her out ASAP. If they potty outside, treat & praise.

I did this with Ace for about 3 to 4 mos. But the kennel worked like a CHARM. He was potty trained FULLY in 4mos. with no accidents. He is now 8 mos. and I glad to have a well trained, kenneled pup. He goes right in with no treats now and pottys outside with no treats.

Ace & I wish you the best!!

on 3/18/2009 I work a 11pm-7am job. I'm planning on getting a yorkies puppy soon but wanted to get a little info first. When potty training the puppy is it healthy to leave the puppy in the crate all night take it outside in the morning to go potty when I get home and then stick it back in the crate while I sleep during the day or should I get up every two hours to take it out? Thank you for your help.

on 5/30/2008 One solution to help potty train your dog is The Pet Loo. It's a lifelong cost effective solution, where unlike wee wee pads, it does not pollute our Earth. The Pet Loo has perforated synthetic grass to give your dog the feeling of going on real grass. The perforations create a urine drainage system to allow the urine to flow through a slightly slanted tray, which creates gravity, and therefore pushes the urine thrugh a small hole and into a catch bucket. The catch bucket is then removed at the end of the day by using the handly to pull it out and then the urine gets flushed down the toilet.

It's recommended to clean The Pet Loo daily by pouring warm water over the grass to flush any of the excess urine.

on 4/3/2008 I'm glad you discussed how PEOPLE need a little 'training', in regards to being conditioned to having a dog. It starts with owning up to the responsibility, challenge and persistence, that comes with the fur.
