As summer pool season approaches, so do the risks of public swimming borne illnesses. Unfortunately, chlorine and other chemicals do not get rid of all pathogens. Whether you prefer an outdoor pool or an indoor pool, prevent Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs) by following these basic hygiene principles at the pool.

From Quick Guide: Practice Good Hygiene
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Always shower and make sure your children are showered before entering the pool. This process gets rid of any germs that might be hanging out on the body and keeps them out of the water where they might infect others. Also, it rids the body of organic matter that reacts with pool chemicals to produce toxins.

  2. Step 2

Keep an eye on children and take them on frequent bathroom breaks to keep pathogen-rich urine and fecal matter out of the pool.

  3. Step 3

Change diapers in the bathroom or locker room rather than on the deck of the pool for the same reason as Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom.

  5. Step 5

Do not enter the pool if stomach issues or gastrointestinal problems have been plaguing you. Residual organic matter may reside on your skin without your knowing it and end up in the pool.
