In Thai culture, the wai is used to communicate all sorts of feelings and thoughts. Make the wai to say "Sawadee" (hello) whenever you meet someone new or anytime someone says "Sawadee" to you. The wai can communicate thanks or apologies as well as respect and hello. Follow these steps to make the wai properly.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    First, remember to smile. Thai people are always smiling and this friendly gesture sets the tone for a pleasant interaction.

  2. Step 2

    Place palms together, in prayer position.

  3. Step 3

    If you are meeting a young person or child, hold hands at chest position and bow in a nodding motion.

  4. Step 4

    If you are meeting a friend or someone of equal stature, place hands at chin level and bow in a nodding motion.

  5. Step 5

    If you are meeting someone deserving of utmost respect, raise hands to face, at least to lip level and bow in a nodding motion.

  6. Step 6

    If you are making a gesture of respect to the Buddha, raise hands to the forehead and bow.
