How to Throw a Nintieth Birthday Party

Being feted at a birthday party is special, but even more so as the person ages. But putting together a birthday party for a senior citizen--a 90-year-old, in fact--is truly special, but it does have its challenges. Here are a few things to think about that will make it a celebration to remember.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Enlist the help of members of the person's family, because they will want to play a role in this historic event. Find out the highlights of the honoree's life; and if possible, get plenty of pictures and memorabilia that can be displayed at the celebration. Have them share stories to you that can be retold at the party. Find out what is important to the honoree and what to avoid.
Step2
Include the honoree in the planning. At the outset, find out whether he would prefer a party with lots of guests or just an intimate family gathering, because some people become introverted as they age. Ask him about what has stood out most in his life.
Step3
Determine where the party will take place. If it is a public place, book it now to avoid schedule conflicts. If a meal is involved, plan the menu and other logistics to avoid last minute decisions. Set aside hotel rooms near the party for out-of-town guests. Find out how soon the location will be available before the party so you can decorate.
Step4
Plan what happens at the party. If budget allows, consider using the photos and memorabilia obtained from the family in a montage which can be videotaped, turned into a slide presentation, or simply displayed at the party. Plan the flow of the party to avoid "dead air." Once the plan is in hand, stick to it.
Step5
Memorialize the event for both the honoree and the guests by providing them with something that will commemorate the special party. Think about a gift, videotape of the event, or a program that includes copies of some of the pictures or memorabilia that were seen at the party.
Step6
As you plan the event, remember that the honoree is 90-years-old. Make sure the "special stuff" happens early in the event if the honoree tires and has to leave before the festivities are concluded. Allow for breaks during the party so the honoree can catch her breath.

Tips & Warnings

  • Send out the invitations early. The worst result is not having special people there to celebrate. Out-of-town guests will need extra time to plan their trips.
