If your husband is anything like mine used to be, your living room is full on dirty dishes and empty soda cans. Here's how I got him to clean up his act. And nagging doesn't work...trust me.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Patience
  • Time
Step1
When your husband finishes eating and leaves his mess on the table, don't say anything. Don't look annoyed. Don't sigh. Also don't look happy. (This is where the patience comes in).
Step2
If your husband even touches his plate, thank him for putting it away for you. A simple, 'Thanks for putting that away, I could really use the help tonight.' is all you need. Chances are at that point he'll feel to bad to not put it away for you.
Step3
When he comes back from putting his plate in the sink or dishwasher thank him earnestly. Kiss him. Rub his back. Let him watch Sports Center.
Step4
Repeat this pattern. It may take awhile, but chances are your husband will like the attention he's getting from the simple act of walking across the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • After your husband his mastered the plate try this technique in other areas. It works well as people respond better to positives rather than negatives.
  • Don't make your praise over the top. You don't want it to seem sarcastic.
  • Remember that your husband is not a dog. You can train him to do things, but don't make him slave.

on 3/7/2008 Positive reinforcement! Just like dog training (even if your husband isn't a dog haha.)
