Naturally Dye Easter Eggs

Looking for something new and interesting this Easter? Color your eggs naturally instead of with synthetic dye.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on colors. Choose fruits or vegetables which have that color. Shoot for deep, rich colors as they will produce more dramatic results. Here are a few examples. Red—red cabbage or beats. Brown—coffee or black tea. Yellow—Chamomile Tea. Purple—dark purple grapes.

  2. Step 2

In a sauce pan, add one quart of water and two tablespoons of vinegar. Bring to a boil. If you are doing a lot of eggs, increase the amount of water and vinegar proportionally.

  3. Step 3

Add the dying ingredients (do one color at a time). Lower heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Some ingredients may react better if they are diced or smashed up prior to this step.

  4. Step 4

Strain off as much of the solids as possible. Return the die to the pan and bring to a boil.

  5. Step 5

Add the eggs (raw, not boiled). The dye must cover the eggs. Boil for 10 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Remove the eggs and allow to cool.
