Step 1
First, find out if St. Patrick's Day is being celebrated in State College on the actual holiday. Sometimes, because of Spring Break, students and bars will celebrate what is known as “State Patty's Day.” This is held on a different day than St. Patrick's Day.
-
Step 2
Buy green Penn State shirts and hats. You can find these online or at the student bookstore and the Family Clothesline. You'll need green clothing for St. Patrick's Day. If you're in State College celebrating St. Patrick's Day, you should buy some green Penn State apparel.
-
Step 3
Get to the Phyrst early in the morning on St. Patrick's Day. The Phyrst, the best Irish pub in State College, has kegs and eggs every St. Patrick's Day as well as live entertainment throughout the day. However, it can be nearly impossible to get into, even around nine in the morning. Find out when the Phyrst is opening and try to get to the bar at least a half hour before it does.
-
Step 4
Eat a meal at the Corner Room. The Corner Room will serve some traditional Irish meals and desserts during St. Patrick's Day and can give you somewhat of a break from the normal bar scene.
-
Step 5
If the NCAA Tournament is being played on St. Patrick's Day, spend some time at Sports Cafe. Sports Cafe is the only sports bar on the Penn State campus and is the best place to watch March Madness in all of State College. You should definitely try to get to Sports Cafe before noon, however, if you hope to be able to watch any of the action, as this bar also fills up quickly.

on 3/13/2009 St Patrick's Day in State College is a farce. There is no celebration of Irish heritage here. They have one bar = Phyrst that advertises as Irish but I have never seen an Irish band there. Last year I was at the Ale house where when asked the crowd at the piano bar, informed the band that they did not want to hear Irish music. If you want to celebrate choose Altoona, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Scranton or Philadelphia.State College get a clue!!

on 1/24/2009 St. Patrick's Day is always the day to celebrate in State College! The students came up with this silly idea to have a "State Patrick's Day" on some other random day, simply because the real holiday falls during their Spring Break - occasionally. A lot of the bars don't even bother participating in this "fake" holiday! If you're coming to State College for St. Patrick's Day, come on the REAL holiday. I guarantee there will be stuff going on everywhere.
