Russian punch needle embroidery uses a long hollow needle with a handle. The hollow tube extends from the sharp point right through the top of the handle. Threading a punch needle means getting thread, embroidery floss or ribbon through the entire tube properly. Read on to learn how to thread a punch needle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Punch needle
  • Punch needle threader
  • Thread, floss or ribbon
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Insert the twisted-wire loop end of the punch needle threader into the hollow tube next to the sharp end. Continue to slide it through until it pokes out the top of the handle.

  2. Step 2

Cut a long length of floss or ribbon, if you are using a material that isn't wound on a spool. If you are using floss, separate the number of strands you are going to use (probably three).

  3. Step 3

Insert the end of the floss, ribbon, or spool-wound thread into the wire loop end of the threader.

  4. Step 4

Pull the thread or ribbon completely through the punch needle. Allow several inches of thread or ribbon to be drawn through the hole.

  5. Step 5

Insert the other end of the threader into the eye of the needle, starting from the hollow/bevel side. Pull it through the eye, bringing the thread or floss with it.

  6. Step 6

Remove the threader and put it in a safe place. Your punch needle is threaded and ready to go.
