How to Determine Risk of Collision

Knowing which boat has the right of way is often the difference between a pleasurable day on the water and a collision followed by a lengthy time talking to marine police and the Coast Guard. Right of way becomes of great importance when it involves two boats heading toward roughly the same point. This can be either head on or at an angle. One of the boats has the right way. Knowing which one is often the difference between a friendly wave and an insurance claim after a collision. Right of way involves “privileged” and “burdened” vessels, which we cover in a separate how-to. For this how-to, simply recognizing which boat would have right of way is the goal. Again, the whole purpose of knowing which boat has right of way is to avoid collisions. Read on to learn how to determine risk of collision.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Binoculars
  • Basic knowledge of angles
  • Boat
  • Copy of 72COLLREGS
  • Common sense
Step1
As another vessels approaches on a seeming collision course, “eyeball” it. Pick a point on the forward end of your boat facing the other vessel that is also on the bearing you set and draw an imaginary vertical line through the point.
Step2
Maintain your course and speed.
Step3
Watch the other vessel. If it falls well astern of the bearing line, there is little risk of collision.
Step4
If the vessel pulls even with or ahead of your bearing line, there is a risk of collision and you must maneuver to avoid the collision.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't panic in a meeting situation. They happen all the time on the water.
  • Make eye contact with the other skipper. This establishes a clear line of communication.
  • Never assume the other boat sees you. If you believe there is a risk of collision, take appropriate action.
