Finding the right seeds for your garden. To find the right seeds for your garden, you have to make sure to find the right companies that have produced high quality seeds. Now you can go to your local walmart or even a local organic shop. Some people prefer to buy plants and not bother with the seeds. If you will be doing this then make sure the plants look healthy and have no sickly leaves on them. Once again walmart carries these as well as Lowe's and Home Depot. I prefer to go with companies you have to order from because they are plant nurseries and only send the best of what they have. There are a couple we use to get our seeds from http://www.tomatogrowers.com/index.html is one and the other is http://www.gurneys.com. Now gurneys carries allot of different kinds so choose what you like, the best way is to look through their items and find what interests you. They also carry plants so you don't have to worry about the second step if you choose this option.

If Using seeds you will also need starter trays. These can be purchased fairly cheap at your local walmart. Some people prefer to buy little pods that hold the seed and keep in the moisture to allow the seed to grow. Now this part is totally up to whether or not you prefer not to get dirty. If you like can just buy a good mixture of dirt and fertilizer to start your seeds in the trays. Planting two or three to each is not bad as long as you keep an eye on them and can separate them once they are big enough as not to choke the others out. Keep them moist. It is also good to get a farmer's almanac so you can know when planting season for your area will be. But its usually the same everywhere, don't put anything in the ground until after last frost. Growing your seeds indoors until they are ready to plant outside is fairly simple. Plant the seeds, keep moist and give lots of sunlight. Start growing them though a few weeks before planting season to give them a good chance at survival on the outside.

        tilling the land

Getting the soil in your garden ready. Ok you seen were I put sand as a requirement. Now you can choose not to do this. that's no problem. But in my experience with different types of soil I have found that a sandy ground allows the roots to spread quicker allowing the plant to grow to full potential, thus giving us the 10ft stocks of corn we use to grow. Ok so we are ready to work on the soil. If you have a tiller this comes in handy and makes your job easier. If not then its gonna take a lot of elbow grease to get it prepared. Either way the ground needs to be turned over and roots from grass and weeds removed if possible. Start by using the rake to rake away any debris. Then using the hoe start turning the ground. Once this is done if you chose to use the sand and don't forget fertilizer, then it can be spread over the soil and worked into it. You don't want to use allot of sand because it can stick to your vegetables making it hard to eat what you grow. Make sure you find a spot that will get plenty of sun. As well as moisture but not water logged. Now it is time to get it ready by putting it in rolls. That way when you plant your vegetables you can walk in between the rolls to tend to your garden. Once you have removed weeds and turned over the soil and added the sand and fertilizer you are ready to plant your plants when the season is right.

Now when its time to plant. Take your hoe and your plants and some water. Pull the dirt back to leave a whole big enough to cover the roots and some of the stem. Plant your plants in rolls all the way across and then water well. As they grow you can find sticks and use strips of a old t shirt to tie them up so they don't lay on the ground.

Also scroll down the page and look at tips and warnings. They can provide useful information through the process.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Placing a 10" metal pole into the ground can help deter moles. Simply place it at the end of your garden and use something metal to hit it in the mornings and evenings and the vibration will scare them away from your lovely garden without pesticides harming your body.

    • For green beans you can tie up two sticks in a tepee like style on each end tying strings in different heights on each side so that they can grow on these and stand tall as well as keep birds off of them.

    • And although I absolutely love broccoli myself growing it at a different part of your garden can help deter beetles from everything else.

    • It is also wise to invest in small containers that attract and trap bees so you don't have to worry about getting stung while outside. Place it in opposite ends of your garden to keep them away from you.

    • When planting the seeds in trays do not put them so far down they cannot grow. The length from the finger tip to the first knuckle is sufficient.
