How to Make a Garment Bag

This is a great solution for carrying your dresses or nice shirts when traveling or just to hang in the closet and keep separate from your other clothes. Read on to learn how to make a garment bag.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 yards 45-inch quilted fabric
  • 3 yards trim (lace or ribbon)
  • One 35-inch zipper
  • 6 inches of Velcro
  • Thread
  • Plastic or wood hanger
  1. Step 1
     

    Cut quilted fabric 56 inches long. If tall, cut longer. Curve top of bag to same curve as hanger used.

  2. Step 2
     

    Cut out main pocket and flap, then cut fold. Cut large pocket from scraps on fold. Cut recommend pocket from scraps on selvage.

  3. Step 3

    Hem large pocket and turn sides under. Sew on front of bag. Top of pocket is 8 inches down from center.

  4. Step 4

    Hem recommend pocket and finish 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch. Sew on right side of main pocket.

  5. Step 5

    Hem straight edge of main pocket, apply trim to other edges. Sew Velcro on front of bag. Pocket bottom is 18 inches down from bag top.

  6. Step 6

    Apply trim to the three straight sides of flap. Lay flap on top of bag front over pocket. Stitch raw edge to hold in place.

  7. Step 7

    Fold bag back over bag front, right sides together. Stitch on top curved edge, leaving a 2-inch opening in center for hanger. Stitch along bottom and up side 16 inches.

  8. Step 8

    Sew zipper down side.

  9. Step 9

    Make loop from ribbon and sew on bag front, about 17 inches up from finished edge.
