Christians have been entrusted with the biggest privilege in the world: to be ambassadors of God. An ambassador to any country must meet many criteria. They must have the right credentials, the right education, and know the right people. When God calls us to be His representatives on earth, He doesn't ask us for our school transcripts. He doesn't put us through a background check. He chooses us as we are, faults and all. It is now up to us to fill our entire beings with His spirit so we can become channels through which His grace, favor and unconditional love flow to all the people we come in contact with. But, how do we receive His amazing spirit? Read on to learn how to become filled with the spirit of God.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bible
  • An open heart
  1. Step 1

Ask for God's spirit. Remember, "Ask and it shall be given unto you." (Matthew 7:7). The same power that rose Jesus from the dead is available to you. Read Ephesians 3:16-20. Let verse 19 stir you with excitement: "So you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." Imagine being filled to the brim with the fullness of God. Confess this verse out loud. Say, "The power of God dwells in me." Every morning, pray for God to flood your entire being with His spirit so it spills onto all the people you come in contact with.

  2. Step 2

Take every thought captive. In the Bible, Corinthians 10:5 says, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." It all starts with the mind. In the mind, the victory is either won or lost. Don't see yourself as a weak individual. You are a warrior, a champion, a soldier for Almighty God. You are in a war. The enemy would love to destroy you with your own thoughts. Refuse to fall prey to his pathetic attempts to finish you off. When wrong thoughts enter your mind, immediately reject them. Do not give them strength by dwelling on them. However, rejecting wrong thoughts is not enough. You must replace them with the right ones. Fix your mind on them and confess them out loud consistently until their meaning seeps into your soul (Philippians 4:8).

  3. Step 3

Put on your spiritual armor. Ephesians 6:13-15 says, "Wherefore take up the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace." Realize you are in a war. Your weapons are not guns or sophisticated armaments, they are far more effective than inanimate objects. Notice you are to put on the armor of God the same way you put on your clothes. Your clothes will not fall on you; neither will your spiritual armor. See yourself as the spiritual soldier you are. Know that you now have the power to rebuke the enemy. God has given you the authority to defeat him. The devil longs to devour you, but remember, "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." (1 John 4:4). You are a warrior. Talk like it. Act like it. Live like it (1 John 4:4).

  4. Step 4

Choose to be a sower. Sow into people's lives. Become a radical, aggressive giver. Ask God to help you see the people around you the way He sees them so you can bless them the way He wants to bless them.

  5. Step 5

Let your line shine. As God's ambassador, you represent hope, love and happiness. Christians must be the happiest people on the face of the earth, for we serve the most High, the only live God. Be determined to represent Him the best way you can, never in your own strength, but His own. (Isaiah 40:31), knowing your labor for the Lord shall never be in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58).

on 10/20/2008 This is the most pure and accurate (in my opinion of bible study) of exactly how to be filled with God. I think most people ask Jesus into their hearts and never realize, 'He's still there!' Christ in you your hope of glory (and everything else in life). God's Spirit empowers us to be new creations, not old struggling creations. I love this article!
