Step1
The first step in finding the right sound system is to determine the size of the room into which you'll place it. If you place it against a wall, you should still have two-thirds of the wall free to place chairs, plants or whatever (one-third on each side of the system).
Step2
Secondly, you'll want a system that's easy to maneuver. There are many whose volume controls have preset volume levels. In most cases, these won't do more than irritate you, because they'll either be too loud or too soft. Find one that you can smoothly turn to EXACTLY the level you want.
Step3
Your "bass" control should be as maneuverable. YOU should be able to set the amount of "depth" you want, instead of a manufacturer.
Step4
Make sure that speakers can be connected easily, and that no excess wires would be exposed (some brands seem to have more wires than necessary for the speakers). If these can easily be pulled out or disconnected by accident, the speakers could become damaged.
Step5
The next step, then, is to look for a good brand that is reasonably priced. This is where newspaper inserts and advertisements can come in handy.
But here's an important hint: The harder the salesman tries to "push" a model on you, the less likely that people are actually buying it -- and the higher the "markup" on the model. Be sure to look, judge and test by YOURSELF. If it's not the model you want, don't be afraid to tell him "NO!"
Step6
Also, be sure to get a solid, moneyback guarantee AND warranty before leaving the store! This is to protect YOU as well as your investment. The guarantee MUST come from the store from which you purchased the item, and NOT the manufacturer!
Step7
Finally, set the new system up in your room and give it a good "test drive". ALL components -- stereo, CD player, etc. -- should be working perfectly. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT, though, in case it's not all that the salesman or advertisement said it would be.
If it meets all your specifications, then just sit back and enjoy your music!
