Children of all ages leave a trail behind them and a mess that details the activities of the day. Though it can feel like a hopeless situation, there are ways to keep your house tidy with children. In the end, using these steps makes for less work, less time involved in picking up, and less frustration.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Storage bins of various sizes-can be shoeboxes, moving boxes, laundry baskets, plastic bins
  • Glass cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Soft cloth
  • Sticker labels
  • Permanent marker

Step1
Use one small storage bin for each level of your home. Fill each bin with a glass cleaner, paper towel roll, an all-purpose cleaner and a soft cloth. Keep this in a closet or cupboard out of reach of small children, but easily accessible by you.
Step2
Use assorted bin sizes to keep small toys, puzzles and games in reasonable order. Label each bin according to what it holds. Use the sticker labels and permanent marker. On your label, use words and pictures to describe the contents. This way even small children can put items where they belong.
Step3
Teach and practice the simple rule of “put one toy away before taking out another.” This will prevent the playroom, living room and hallway from becoming a dumping ground for every fun thing the child has.
Step4
Encourage all children, yours and guests, to remove their shoes at the door. This will prevent all outside shoe goo from sticking on your hard floors and getting mashed into your carpets.
Step5
Only eat at the table. Do not let children, or adults, eat in the family room, the living room or their bedrooms. No matter how careful they may be, crumbs will land on the floor and create another mess for you to clean up.
Step6
During nap time or quiet time, quickly do a once-over with the glass cleaner and all-purpose cleaner on the level that needs it. This doesn’t have to involve much elbow grease and getting in the corners. Simply clean up the current sticky spots and fingerprints. Leave the heavy cleaning for your weekly chores.
Step7
