Many wine lovers are unfortunate to also be headache sufferers. There are a number of causes of wine-induced headaches, some still unknown. These guidelines will help you have fewer wine-related headaches.
Keep a wine journal. This will help you remember which wines tend to give you a headache and which do not if you drink wine on a regular basis. The general rule is that if a food or drink causes headache symptoms, it normally happens in 12 to 24 hours.
Step2
Try not to mix wines. Stick with one varietal so that you know if one particular type of wine gives you a headache.
Step3
Avoid reds. Generally, red wines tend to give people more headaches than white wines, but this is not always the case. Champagne is also known for causing headaches.
Step4
Drink plenty of water. Drink more than you normally would. Dehydration can lead to headaches.
Step5
Look for organic wines and wines that contain no sulfites. The label will contain this information. These seem to cause fewer headaches for those who are sensitive, though the wines may be more difficult to find.
Step6
Pay more. Though a wine cannot be judged on price alone, be aware that for sensitive people, most extremely inexpensive wines will cause headaches. It’s best not to chance it. That being said, an expensive wine is not guaranteed to be headache-free either.
Step7
Pick some of your favorites that do not give you headaches and stick to those.
Step8
Drinking in moderation is much less likely to cause a headache from wine, so make a note of how many glasses you can safely have and do not exceed your limit.
