The Florida State University football team is a program rich with tradition in Tallahassee, Florida. Here are the basics for learning all there is to know about the team as it stands today.
Get to know the team. The Florida State football program is known as the Seminoles, and their official colors are garnet and gold.
Step2
Learn about the coach. Florida State is led by head coach Bobby Bowden, who is currently the all-time wins leader in major college football. He is from Birmingham, Alabama, and has a wife named Ann. He is forever immortalized at Florida State University by a bronze statue that sits outside the football stadium. The field the team plays on is also called "Bobby Bowden Field."
Step3
Know where they play. The Seminoles play at Doak Campbell Stadium, which is located on the southwest corner of the school's campus.
Step4
Celebrate their success. Florida State has won two national championships--in 1993 when they defeated Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and in 1999 when they defeated Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.
Step5
Add up the numbers. Florida State has a host of retired jerseys but only a few retired numbers. Some numbers that will likely never be worn again are 2, 17, 25, 34, 50 and 53.
Step6
Follow the players. Florida State has seen its fare share of talented players go through the program, but some are obviously more famous than others. Some former players who are nationally recognized are Burt Reynolds, Deion Sanders, Derrick Brooks, Fred Biletnikoff, Antonio Cromartie and Warrick Dunn.
Step7
Know that Florida State has had two Heisman Trophy winners. They are quarterbacks Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke.
Step8
Glory in the traditions. Just as Florida State has a plethora of former great players, the program has quite a few traditions as well. But perhaps the most famous one is what happens just before kick-off, when Chief Osceola, who sits atop a horse, slams a flaming spear into the midfield logo.
