Cryptobiotic soil, made of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), lichens, mosses, green algae and micro fungi, is a living organism unique to desert environments. It is a very fragile organism and care must be taken not to step on it or otherwise disturb it, as it takes a long time to form.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Cryptobiotic soil looks like a bunch of little tubules or teeny worm holes coming up from the ground. It is formed in large patches.
Step2
To avoid walking on this delicate and vital desert life form, take caution to stay on existing trails.
Step3
If this is not possible, walk on slick rock and in washbottoms.
Step4
Educate other people about the importance of cryptobiotic soil as you travel in the desert.
