The average luge run covers a drop of about 300 feet and can exceed speeds of 90 mph. Proper technique is important. Read below for some pointers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Luge sled

Step1
The luge start is an important part of your luge run. It has five parts: block, compression, pull, extension and push. In the most basic terms this is the act of rocking the sled back and forth to gain momentum before you start moving.
Step2
The next step in a luge ride is entering the sled. This should be done with a running start using a quick jumping motion.
Step3
Once in the sled you need to use your body to control your direction. Lean into turns and put pressure on different parts of the sled to affect your direction. Practice on slow, gradual hills as you get the hang of it.
