How to Name a Disk

You might want to change the name of one of the disks on your computer. Or perhaps you want to name a disk something more than simply “Local Disk (C:).” The following steps will show you how to name a disk.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer using Microsoft Windows

Step1
Click “Start” and then click “My Computer.” Alternatively, double click “My Computer” from your desktop.
Step2
Click on the disk you want to name.
Step3
Go to the “File” menu in the toolbar. Click “Properties.” The “Properties” dialog for your specified disk will open.
Step4
Click on the “General” tab.
Step5
In the field following the disk icon, type the name you wish to assign to this disk.
Step6
Click “Apply” and “OK.”

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer uses the FAT (File Allocation Table) file system, the name can be up to 11 characters long.
  • If your computer uses NTFS (New Technology File System), which is highly likely, the name can be up to 32 characters long.
