Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- A computer with a relatively large hard drive (no smaller than 60 GB)
- A high-speed Internet connection
Step1
Download and install a BitTorrent client. BitTorrent software is the most popular (and easiest) filesharing software currently in existence. For beginners, I recommend visiting BitTorrent or BitTornado for their BitTorrent software (see Resources below).
Step2
Download and install a codecs package so you can watch what you download. Most anime is not in a typical video format that most media players such as Windows Media Player recognize. You will need to download the codecs that will allow your media player to play your downloaded anime. This sounds complicated, but do not fear. Visit CCCP and download and install their complete codec package (see Resources below). Their package has every audio and video codec needed for every format.
Step3
Find your anime! There are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands, of fansubbing groups out there to satisfy your anime needs. Not all of them have websites that advertise what projects they are working on. Luckily, the fans at Baka-Updates list daily the new releases from the various fansubbing groups. They also have a handy search feature on their site to help you search for specific anime titles (see Resources below).
Step4
Start downloading. Once you find the episode you want, click on the link to start the download. Your BitTorrent client will automatically start the process for you. It's that easy.
Step5
Be a good anime fan and delete any anime that becomes licensed in the United States. If you like a show, be sure to buy it when it is released. Not only is it a nice thing to do--not to mention it allows future anime to be brought over here--but it's illegal not to do so.
