Add simple flower designs for an eye-catching quilt.

An embroidered floral quilt is a customized home decor accessory that you can drape across the family room sofa or use as a blanket or comforter in the bedroom. The quilt also makes a thoughtful personalized gift for a special friend or family member. You can make a colorful quilt and embroider different-colored flowers on each of the quilt squares or make a stark contrast quilt from black and white fabric squares and black and white flower designs on each square.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the squares for your quilt. Cut 12-inch-by-12-inch rectangles from your lightweight fabric. Cut 20 squares for a quilt that measures about 48 inches by 60 inches.

    • 2

Place the tracing paper on top of one of your fabric squares. Place your floral embroidery design on top of the tracing paper. Pin around the edges to keep the layers in place. Trace over the embroidery design with a ballpoint pen to transfer the image to the fabric. Remove the pins, embroidery design and tracing paper.

    • 3

Spray the back of the fabric with a temporary adhesive and press a piece of tear-away stabilizer against the back. Slide the fabric with stabilizer in between the top and bottom of the embroidery hoop. Close the hoop to secure.

    • 4

Thread the embroidery floss onto the needle and knot the ends together. Insert the needle from the underside of the fabric and stitch the design. Knot the floss on the underside and remove the hoop. Gently tear away the stabilizer.

    • 5

Repeat to add a floral embroidery design to each square of fabric.

    • 6

Arrange the fabric squares on your working surface in a rectangle that measures 48 inches by 60 inches. Sew the squares together with a whipstitch.

    • 7

Cut a 48-inch by 60-inch rectangle of lining fabric and place it on top of the back side of the quilt. Sew the four sides together to join the layers.

    • 8

Cut the quilt binding. Cut two 48-inch-long pieces of double-fold bias binding tape and two 60-inch long pieces. Make a 45-degree angle edge on every end.

    • 9

Slide one 48-inch-long side of the quilt into one 48-inch-long piece of binding tape. Pin the tape to the quilt and sew a straight stitch or top stitch. Repeat with each of the remaining sides.
