How to Do Independent Study Projects

Doing independent study projects not only looks good on your CV or resume, it’s a great way to get to learn more about something that is of particular interest to you!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • An idea
  • A teacher or professorial advisor
  • Determination!
Step1
Figure out what sort of project interests you.
Step2
Identify which teacher or professor would be most likely to be interested in being your advisor. Ask them – either in person or via e-mail.
Step3
Find out what forms the school requires from you. You don’t want to do all that work only to find out you won’t get credit because you missed this important step!
Step4
Try to find a unique angle for your project – rather than all library research, think about the possibility of an Internet poll or video project or observational research. (Note: If you are interviewing people – even over the Internet – be sure to follow any school guidelines regarding anonymity and ethics!)
Step5
Do your research and write the paper or create the project. Turn it in by the deadline!
Step6
Be sure any forms required by the school have been signed by the teacher or professor and turned in to the proper place.
Step7
Be sure this information gets onto your CV (curriculum vitae, your academic resume).

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes you can take your project and present at an student or even an academic conference.
