How to Make a George Washington Wig Out of a Paper Bag

On Presidents' Day -- or any day you're feeling presidential -- you can make a funny George Washington–style wig with a few snips and some paper curls, tape and ribbon. Use a standard white paper lunch bag or one that is slightly bigger, like the kind you can get at donut shops. The bag should be able to fit around the top of your head.

    Things You'll Need

    • White paper bag
    • Pencil
    • Ruler
    • Ribbon or string
    • Scissors
      • 1

Open the bag and stand it on the counter like you were going to fill it with lunch. Draw a dot in the center of the front side, about an inch up from the bottom of the bag. From that dot, make a small rounded "W," using the dot as the midpoint in the "W." The sides of the "W" should end at the side creases and extend about an inch or two lower than the midpoint dot. This will form the wig's widow's peak. On each narrow side of the bag, draw a semicircle, starting the lines at the points where the "W" meets the side creases. Draw the semicircles so they are curving downward, toward the counter.

Cut off the bag's front and side panels following the "W" and semicircles you drew. Save the front panel's paper for making curls.

Turn the bag over to the side you didn't cut. Cut eight strips up the bag from the top end to about three inches from the bottom of the bag. This will be the ponytail of Washington's wig. Tie the strips together gently at their midpoint with a ribbon.

Cut three long pieces from the leftover front-panel paper. Roll them up like tubes and tape them so they look like long white cigarettes. Cut them in half. Now you have six shorter tubes.

      • 5

Put the hat on your head. The bottom of the bag will now be the top of the hat, and the ponytail will be at your back. Feel above your ears, and decide where to put your tube curls.

      • 6

Take off the hat. Tape on the tube curls, three on each side, stacked on top of each other in a row over each ear.
