You want a bottle or glass of something that bubbles. That means Champagne, right? But, Prosecco and Cava are two other European sparkling wines that can do the trick at a fraction of the price.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your price range. Are you willing to spend $15 for a glass, or would you prefer to spend $6?

  2. Step 2

See what is available on the drink menu or wine list. Does the bar or restaurant offer sparkling wines other than Champagne? If not, your decision has been made for you.

  3. Step 3

Determine what taste you are looking for. Generally speaking, Champagne and Cava are drier than Prosecco, meaning that they will likely taste a little less sweet. If you are looking for a sweeter taste, Prosecco may be right for you. Cava tends to have a crisp taste with hints of citrus.

  4. Step 4

Consider the occasion. Are you ordering this only because you want something bubbly to drink? If so, going the cheaper (but still delicious) route may be suitable. If, however, you are celebrating a truly special occasion, it may be worth it to splurge on Champagne, for the atmosphere attributed to it if nothing else.

  5. Step 5

Order accordingly and feel free to ask your server or bartender for advice. They should know their products and be able to describe the differences between the sparkling wines they offer

Tips & Warnings
  • If you enjoy Champagne, try both Prosecco and Cava. You may find that you enjoy one or both of their tastes as well and end up saving a lot of money in the long run.
  • Prosecco is produced in Italy, Champagne is produced in France and Cava is produced in Spain. New World producers (those in North America and New Zealand, for example) may make sparkling wines, but they will not technically be any of these three products.
