No one wants to see smudges or water stains in their glass when going to take a sip of wine. Yet, polishing a glass is not as easy at it seems. Some materials leave lint on the glass and others just end up streaking. Here is a quick and simple guide to having a clean, shiny glass.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boiling water
  • A mug
  • Cotton napkin or high-quality paper towels
  • Wine glass(es)
  • Coffee filters, optional
  1. Step 1

Boil water. Make sure it reaches a full boil as you will be using the steam and not the water itself.

  2. Step 2

Pour the boiling water into a mug or other open-mouthed container. Make sure it is not a thin glass, which will conduct the heat from the water and become difficult and dangerous to handle.

  3. Step 3

Hold the wine glass by the stem and invert it over the mug, so that the rising steam fogs the glass.

  4. Step 4

Remove the glass from the steam and take your dry polishing cloth in your other hand. Covering your fingers in a single layer of the cloth (for deeper, more narrow glasses, you may need to bunch the cloth so it extends beyond your fingertips), wipe out the inside of the glass. Keep the pressure light and consistent. You do not want to risk breaking the glass.

  5. Step 5

Use the now slightly dampened section of cloth to wipe the outside of the glass. If the outside needs additional polishing, steam the exterior of the glass and polish.

  6. Step 6

If you do end up leaving a little lint on the glass, a quick polish (without steaming) with a coffee filter is an effective way to remove this residue.
