Children with food allergies don't need to feel ostracized or left out. There are various ways to go about satisfying them and their taste buds.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Allergen-free recipes

Step1
Shop at specialty markets such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's with sizable lines of wheat, egg and dairy-free fresh and packaged items. Try new things; don't be afraid.
Step2
Bake for your children. This will ensure that only allergen-free ingredients go into the mix. No doubt it can be intimidating, but you have to put that aside and jump in. The way I bake is by trial and error.
Step3
Bake with your children. Making them a part of the process not only helps bonding, but instills healthy eating habits.
Step4
Substitute white flour with rice, oat or spelt flour. For butter, there are dairy-free, inexpensive alternatives. For milk, use soy or almond depending upon preferences, allergies and food intolerances. I created my line of healthy baked goods, BethennyBakes, by taking classic, fattening recipes and substituting ingredients one at a time (see link in Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • It's getting easier and easier to find specialty food markets.
