As you shop for clothing it never fails to find one that you just love, but you can’t get it in all the colors you would like. Here is your chance to recreate that wonderful fitting garment in the colors you want. It is best to start making your own patterns from purchased garments with simple designs; otherwise you will be very frustrated and give up.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garment to trace
  • Tracer wheel (needle-point or smooth)
  • Clear rule
  • Pins
  • Pattern Paper
  • Pens and Pencils
  1. Step 1

Laundry the garment to make sure it is not out of shape. Take time to press the top if needed. This way you will have an easier time tracing it.

  2. Step 2

Take some time to examine your top before you go any further. Notice details and embellishments this will make tracing easier.

  3. Step 3

Fold the back in half and pin the center line. Take the edge of the pattern paper, and use that as the fold line. Lay the pinned center back line on the edge of the pattern paper and pin to hold the top down. Begin to use the tracing wheel to go around all the seams on the back.

  4. Step 4

If the back does not lay flat, then readjust the top and finish tracing the back. Continue this until it is completely finished.

  5. Step 5

Remove the back from the pattern paper and use the pen or pencil which ever you prefer. Contact the dots left from the tracing wheel this is your sewing line. You will need to add seam allowances to the pattern before you cut it out.

  6. Step 6

Use the same process for the front of the top. Make sure to mark the details that are part of the design; otherwise you will not have the same garment when you make yours.

  7. Step 7

Take your sleeve and fold in half. Take your hands, and hand press it out flat. Pin into place on the pattern paper and roll your tracing wheel around the edge of the sleeve.

  8. Step 8

Take your pen or pencil, and contact the dots. You can use the folded (top) edge of the sleeve as the fold line.

  9. Step 9

Take your clear rule to add seam allowances all around you paper pattern. Cut out the pattern pieces and start your project.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to purchase the same kind of fabric that your garment is made of. This will help you to have the same wonderful fit as your ready made garment.
