Step1
Being a freegan consists of a way of thinking and living that translates into "simplicity". You stop over consuming and begin searching for ways to use what others have thrown away. There are different degrees of living this lifestyle. I will offer up some suggestions of how you can implement a few basic principles of living the freegan lifestyle.
Step2
I'd like you to sit down and contemplate what it is you actually need to survive and be content. Do you really need to have the latest fashions? Do you need to buy as many groceries as you do? How many leftovers do you throw away each day? Consider how much garbage you produce. Take a few days to really pay attention to these things. If you don't better understand the concept of freeganism after this challenge, go a head and continue on with your over consuming lifestyle and wondering what you are actually working for.
Step3
There are many advantages to living this way. Once you realize that you can get by with a lot less you will notice that your standard of life actually improves. You will have more time, more money, and a cleaner conscience.
Step4
Once you have decided to give it a whirl, the easiest place to begin is in your own home. Rid yourself of unneccesary items and services. If you have two or three closets full of clothes and excersize equipment that you haven't even looked at in several months or years, let alone attempted to wear or use...........give it away to a homeless shelter, Goodwill, or another reputable charity. Simplify your life.
Step5
Now, here's the fun part, or the uneasy part for you squeemish people. I'm going to tell you how you can get up to 3/4 of your groceries for free. It might be hard to adjust to at first, but once you begin searching, you will be addicted. At night, go to a local grocery store and check out the dumpsters, either behind the store, or in very large cities, in the front. You will be amazed at how many completely packaged, good foods you will find. There are even fresh fruit with little or no flaws.
Step6
For a new wardrobe with a price tag of zero, a great place to shop is in a college town at the end of spring. All of the college kids are heading home for the summer and they would much rather throw clothes, furniture, and electronics away than to pay to have them shipped. I'm telling you, this is a treasure trove of freebies!
Step7
The more you watch and learn the more you will find. Be creative. You will be amazed at what you will find in the least expected places. If you find more than you can use, give it to someone who has a need. I promise you that if you give it a chance you will find yourself a great deal happier and an enormous amount more content.
