Stomach flus are hard to manage sometimes, because not only do you want to take medicine to get rid of the symptoms, but you also need to be careful of what you eat.

My formula is simple: eat foods that don't irritate my stomach, drink teas that will help strengthen the immune system and relieve the symptoms, and drink plenty of water or sports drinks to prevent dehydration. Here are the details.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • The Brat Diet (Bananas, Rice, Apples, Black or Green tea)
  • Chamomile Tea
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Activated Charcoal tablets
  • Water or Sports Drink
  1. Step 1

The BRAT diet is the acceptable diet for people who are battling a stomach flu. Bananas or banana nectar provide nutrition and essential vitamins and minerals. Rice is a carbohydrate that is gentle on the stomach. Apples and apple juice are also rich in minerals. Black tea and green tea are rich in tannins and can help strengthen the immune system. Tannins are important because they help combat loose stools.

  2. Step 2

Chamomile is the tea that I drink when I am dealing with an upset stomach. It is calming and soothing. And like black and green tea, it is rich in tannins.

  3. Step 3

Peppermint is also a tea that is rich in tannins. The menthol content also makes it essential for dealing with any excess flatulence that may accompany the stomach flu. If you have both a stomachache and excess flatulence, feel free to combine the chamomile and peppermint together in one cup of tea.

  4. Step 4

Activated charcoal tablets can also be used to help deal with watery stools. Charcoal absorbs a lot of moisture and can help solidify the stools. Not everyone reacts well to charcoal, so be sure to check with your doctor.

  5. Step 5

Staying well hydrated is very important. It is easy to get dehydrated with a stomach flu. If you find it impossible to eat, drink sports drinks instead of water because it will provide your body with the electrolytes you need to keep your fluids in balance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to find sports drinks that have glucose, not fructose (glucose is better absorbed in the body).
  • Don't overdo it with sports drinks. Sixteen ounces a day should be more than enough. You can drink water for the rest of the day.
  • Consult with a doctor of there is no improvement in the symptoms after a day or two, because it could be something more serious.
