A low-key Parks & Recreation softball league is one of the most fun ways to spend time outdoors and socialize. Slow pitch, high arc softball is enjoyed around the country in the summer and all year long in places where the weather allows. Check with your local government for a league. Oftentimes, large employers will sponsor leagues anyone can join. Take it upon yourself to be manager to get the ball rolling and relinquish the title to someone else later on (if both parties are willing).

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • softball gloves
  • balls
  • bats
  • catcher's equipment
  • uniforms

Step1
Find a minimum of 12 able-bodied, similarly-minded adults to field a team. Ask around at your workplace, see if any neighbors are interested or use the “friends of friends” chain. Make sure you have enough to supply substitutes, and that you have enough males and females if you are playing in a coed league.
Step2
Familiarize yourself with the rules. There are as many sets of rules as there are softball leagues. Some allow stealing, others don’t even allow lead offs.
Step3
Gather equipment: gloves, bats, balls, catcher’s mask and bases. Some leagues don’t require full catcher regalia, which is why it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules first. If you are lacking in equipment, ask around. Many people have tons of this kind of stuff stored in their garages and are happy to unload it. Check out thrift shops or second-hand sporting goods stores (these are gaining in popularity).
Step4
Schedule practices. Not only does your body need to get in shape for game day, but the team needs to get familiar with each other in order to play better. Practices should be fun, as should the games. Maybe you want to schedule a practice game.
Step5
Seek sponsorship. Perhaps there is a local service club or business that would like to see their name on the back of jerseys and would be willing to pay the league fees and supply shirts. Ask around. Otherwise, split the league fees among the team members.
Step6
Have fun, make friends and enjoy the outdoors. Remember, recreation is just as important as working.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though softball is a low key, non-contact sport, injuries can be serious. Be careful and make sure there is a first aid kit at the game.
