Step 1
Pull the racket out of storage and dust them off. Unless it is a true antique, don’t worry about getting a new racket until you’ve played a few times. New tennis balls are a must, as is proper footwear.
-
Step 2
Consider lessons. Lessons provide a schedule to play and guidance to help get the rust out of your game. Sign up for the level you last played. Or, if it has been a really long time, you may want to consider going down a level.
-
Step 3
Do the drills. Practicing serves and smashes is a great way to ease back into the game. Not only are drills good training for the body, they are a fast way to get you back in the game.
-
Step 4
Have a partner. A playmate ensures the game stays enjoyable and having someone to answer to ensures you will stick with playing the game.
-
Step 5
Set a goal. Few things can motivate like a clearly posted goal. Is there a tournament you’d like to enter? Put the entry form on your mirror. Is there someone you’d like to beat? Put that game date in your calendar. Feed your competitive spirit a healthy diet or camaraderie and good sportsmanship.
