Things You'll Need:
- Stereo
- Recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
- Drawing pad and pencil (optional)
-
Step 1
Insert the CD into the stereo and press “Play.” Sit down somewhere comfortable, lean back and close your eyes.
-
Step 2
As you listen to the famous first movement, think about the words Beethoven himself used to describe the opening motive—“Fate knocking on the door.” Imagine the colorless, bony hand of Fate reaching out from the folds of a coarse black robe to rap harshly on a door. Fate is not sympathetic, and he comes as an unannounced and unwelcome visitor. What sorts of images do these ideas and this music bring to your mind?
-
Step 3
The Fifth Symphony’s peaceful, pastoral second movement stands as a sharp contrast to the turbulence that preceded it. As you listen, imagine a positive, grounded response to the disastrous events brought by the cold, pallid hand of Fate. Perhaps our protagonist has learned that she has terminal cancer, and has responded by leaning on her faith, family and friends for support. Maybe she is taking a peaceful, cleansing walk in the countryside, reflecting on the situation. Imagine her walking through flower-splashed fields, lush forests and alongside peaceful streams.
-
Step 4
The Scherzo third movement brings us back to the darkness of the opening movement, adding a layer of mystery to the preexisting angst. Fate has apparently overcome our protagonist and overwhelmed her positive reactions. Perhaps her body is succumbing to the disease, even as her soul remains hopeful and optimistic.
-
Step 5
The Fifth Symphony begins with tragedy but ends with triumphant splendor. As you listen to the Finale, imagine the protagonist overcoming Fate, however you visualize that happening. You might picture her soul floating up to heaven even as her disease-ravaged body is lowered into the ground, you might imagine her beating her cancer and continuing on with a rich, fulfilled life. However you define triumph over adversity, the end of this symphony certainly embodies exactly that.

Step 6
When the music is over, open your eyes. If you wish, use your pencil and sketch pad to draw some of the scenes you imagined while listening to the symphony.
