How to Find How-to Article Ideas

Writing a how-to article about a topic you know backwards and forwards is not very difficult. The hardest part is coming up with the article idea in the first place. There are a lot of ways to find how-to article ideas. Here are just a few of them.

1. Make a list of the different areas you’re an expert in. Don’t restrict yourself to your professional training and experience--that is only one of the areas you can mine for how-to ideas. Maybe you know a lot about pets, sports, electronics, music, home and garden…don’t leave any stone unturned.
2. Study the different subject categories and subcategories on the site to inspire ideas about subjects you’re interested in and qualified to write about. Study titles of articles that already exist--they might prompt different, original ideas in your brain.
3. Examine each of the areas and brainstorm a few possible article titles in each area. Be sure that the titles are clear and concise. Review the website’s Style Guide for detailed instructions on how to formulate a good title.
4. Once you have the titles, search the site to make sure that those articles don’t already exist. If your titles are unique, submit them for approval.
5. As you go through your daily life, be on the lookout for new, fresh how-to topics. Keep a notebook or Microsoft Word document where you can jot down article ideas as soon as they pop into your mind.
