How to Have Fun at a Party Without Drinking

Whether you’re in high school, college or simply a young adult hanging out with a group of friends and acquaintances, you don’t have to drink to enjoy yourself. If you abstain from alcohol for whatever reason, don’t think that means you can’t or shouldn’t go to parties where others are drinking. Here are some tips for how to make the most of these types of situations.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Go out on the dance floor and imitate the most intoxicated, uncoordinated person you see. (This may be difficult early in the evening, but as the party wears on you should have no shortage of candidates.) In doing this, you’ll have fun, get plenty of exercise, and simulate the experience of being intoxicated without having to deal with a hangover the next day.
Step2
Talk loudly and boisterously to everyone, even though you aren’t drinking. What’s wrong with acting like you’re really having a good time? (Besides, depending on how loud the music is, you might not have much of a choice!)
Step3
Entertain yourself by trying to confuse one or two of the more intoxicated party guests. Engage them in a conversation, and try to stump them with ordinary questions. If they are really drunk, your inquiries won’t have to be very complex. “Why is the sky blue?” “What’s the difference between a frog and a toad?” “Where does the President live?” “What’s your name”--even the simplest questions can yield entertaining, confused responses from an intoxicated person.
Step4
When you get thirsty, drink water, or one of the mixers (orange juice, cranberry juice, 7-Up, daiquiri mix) without mixing anything into it.
Step5
If you have any friends with long hair who get sick to their stomach, go with them into the bathroom and hold their hair as they throw up in the toilet. Not your idea of “having fun?” It’s better than having your friend vomit on her hair.
Step6
Walk (or drive) some of your friends back to their dorms, houses or apartments at the end of the night. Even pedestrian partygoers can use a sober “designated driver” when they’re stumbling over themselves in their state of inebriation.
