Step 1
Begin with a thorough cleaning and de-cluttering of your space. Don't forget the closets! The best bedroom organization would probably be the perfect bed, and maybe a night table, with nothing else.
-
Step 2
Decide upon a paint color. The walls should be a soothing, relaxing color. Warm or cool colors with matching drapes are best. Blinds are all right if you’re trying to save money, but a bedroom needs beautiful, elegant, thick drapes that cover the windows fully and actually block out most of the daylight and even much of the temperature differential in both summer and winter.
-
Step 3
The bed must get priority for furniture placement. The best bed would be far enough off the floor so that you can look and clean under it easily. Nothing should be stored under the bed, except maybe a pair of slippers, so the air can flow. The bed should have a solid headboard and a substantial sturdy frame. It should not creak or shake. If possible, place the head of the bed towards the north and not up against a window or behind a door.
-
Step 4
Use as little furniture in the room as you can. Nobody sits in a chair in a bedroom. It ends up being a clothing rack. A bureau, dresser and lamp table should be enough. Arrange them so that you can walk around in the room with no lights without tripping over anything or stubbing your toe.
-
Step 5
Fold or hang all clothing and keep them put away at all times. The closest needs to be extremely well organized and the door to the closet should be closed whenever you are in bed. All drawers should be completely closed.
-
Step 6
Knick-knacks and gift items are a scourge in our society. If you must have them, find another room for them. The fewer shadows and dust collectors in the bedroom the better. Keep the tops of furniture as clear as possible. Never let dust collect on any furniture in your bedroom.
-
Step 7
Keep the artwork simple and minimal. You don’t need to turn your bedroom into an art gallery. Blend any artwork into the décor for color and style only, not for profound, distracting or engaging content. Never hang anything over the bed unless it’s very light and has no glass in the frame so it can’t hurt you if it falls on you when you’re asleep.
-
Step 8
No plants, pets or even goldfish belong in the bedroom. No exceptions.
-
Step 9
As an added perspective, watch how the light splashes across the room when you open the drapes in the morning. You might be surprised at what you can learn when you shed some light on the subject in terms of furniture placement, cleanliness and what you notice through the window outside.
