Things You'll Need:
- Art canvas
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Stencil brush
- stencils
- Black magic marker
-
Step 1
Choosing the right acrylic paint. Arts and craft stores sell different type of acrylic paints. You will want at least student grade so that the painting will be vibrant and long lasting.
-
Step 2
With the background color already applied to the canvas, use a paintbrush to make short strokes at the bottom of the canvas to simulate grass.
-
Step 3
Choose stencils of ladybugs, worms, butterflies and dragonflies for the bugs theme.
-
Step 4
To use a stencil, add a couple of small pieces of masking tape to the stencil to hold it in place. Put a small amount of paint on the stencil brush and dab it on a paper towel to remove excess paint. Rubbing lightly in a circular motion add paint to the cut out in the stencil, taking care to get all of the edges. The color should be uneven and light to create a more realistic look. Add each character one at a time to the canvas allowing time for the previous item to dry before adding another.
-
Step 5
Using the letter stencils in the same way, spell out the child's name or a cute saying.
-
Step 6
Using the black magic marker, add finishing touches to the artwork. Outline the bugs not all the way around, but enough to make them stand out. Use the magic marker to add spots to the lady bug and lines to the inchworm and things of that nature. Also use it to add a bit more definition to the grass.
