How to Dress Bohemian

How to Dress Bohemianthumbnail
A Bohemian does not conform to conventional stylistic norms.

Bohemian loosely refers to a popular social movement in the 1970s that emphasized intellect above all else, and exploration of the world. Bohemians rarely stayed in one place, and so they needed clothes that could be worn anywhere and for anything, and clothes that would not easily get dirty. Part of the Bohemian movement was to stand out and be heard or even feared by the conservative older generation, and to represent through style a mode of free expression and civil liberty.

    Instructions

Wear busy patterns on at least one part of your outfit, whether this be a skirt, a blouse or a jacket. There should be plenty of colors, and they do not have to necessarily match. You should be able to stand out in your crowd, and your pattern should read like a painting in itself. Floral patterns will also work.

Match this with ragged and used jeans or a simple tan top. Try to wear something that has been lived in a little, not something that you just bought.

      • 3

Rummage through your local thrift store or Goodwill looking for the craziest combination of colors that you can find. Again, you are looking for something that is a little worn, but still stands out and is vibrant with color.

Add plenty of accessories. Leather headbands and bracelets were especially popular for 1970s Bohemians. If you choose to wear earrings or necklaces, wear big, gilded costume jewelry. This should look like an obvious fake, but stand out nonetheless. Part of the Bohemian ethos was to be down to earth as well as nomadic.

Put a simple pair of brown sandals on to complete your look. They should be plenty comfortable. If you are going to be a true Bohemian, you're going to have to walk quite a bit.
