Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday

Classic children’s book author Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904. Throw a party to celebrate his birthday. Follow the steps below to have a true Dr. Seuss adventure.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Play hat, hat, cat. This is a variation of the game called duck, duck, goose where the children sit around in a circle. One child that is "it" walks around the outside of the circle while tapping each person on the head and saying "hat." Whenever he chooses, he then taps someone and says "cat," and that person has to make it all the way around and back to his seat before the child that was "it." The one that doesn’t make it is now "it."

  2. Step 2

Make green eggs and ham. One of Dr. Seuss’ best selling children’s books was named "Green Eggs and Ham" and enjoying one of his creations is an appropriate way to celebrate his birthday.

  3. Step 3

Rhyme like Dr. Seuss. Have all of the children sit in a circle again and each write a word from a Dr. Seuss book on a piece of paper. Put all of the papers in a hat and pass it around the circle while each child draws one piece. Go around one by one and say the word that they picked in a sentence that has as many rhyming words as they can. For example, if cat were drawn, she could say, "There was a cat that was fat and he sat on a mat."

  4. Step 4

Make creatures such as the ones in Dr. Seuss’ books. While still in the circle, place an assortment of craft items in the middle so that each child can reach them. Tell them that they should make their own creative creature like Dr. Seuss did. Use recycling things like toilet paper rolls and egg cartons, along with glue, wiggle eyes, felt and yarn.

  5. Step 5

Have the kids make up stories about their unique creatures.
