Moving from the UK to the US can be a bewildering experience. Here are some useful tips for you to consider before you move

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet
  • Visa
  • Money

Step1
First thing is first, can you work in the US?
The first way to achieve this is to be a citizen.
The second is to marry a citizen, in which case you'll have to apply first for a work permit and then eventually for either a green card or citizenship if you so desire. Each of these steps will require a huge amount of paperwork, a lawyer and some money.
The other way to come over is to be sponsored by a company, which will cost them $3000 and they would have to prove that you are able to provide a work service that someone in the US can not.
Coming over illegally is possible but not advised.
Step2
The next step is working out where to live. The US is as large and diverse as Europe and it is massively advised to visit the states before deciding where to live, unless of course you sent by your job to a particular location.
It is worth noting that each part of America, East coast, west coast, north east, north west, south, mid west and deep south all vary as much in agriculture, culture, politics and weather as Europe does and all these factors should be considered when moving.
Step3
The third thing and quite important to take care of is Healthcare. Whereas we are accustomed to a free health service, in the US you are required to purchase cover for yourself.

Your job may offer health insurance, which is great, however it does mean that like many americans you are quite tied to your job.

If your job does not provide it or if you wish to provide your own cover, you can purchase health care insurance with a range of options but it is important to make sure that you understand what you are covered for.
Step4
For example, deductibles mean that you are paying all charges up to a certain amount right out of your pocket. A co pay means you pay some and the health company pay some. It's also important to check whether you are 'in network' or 'out of network'. In network means you can only use certain health care providers. This is possible to check on the providers websites. Out of network means they pay the same amount for whoever you use.

Healthcare providers include; Blue Shield, Kasier Permanente, AETNA.
Step5
Dental insurance is much the same as health insurance although many people prefer to pay out of pocket rather than a monthly charge

Providers here include AETNA and Guardian
Step6
The next step is about understanding the culture. There are many differences between the cultures and while I can't possibly note them all down here, I would suggest that there are infinite resources available from both british people in the states and american people in the UK. Bill Bryson (American) is one perspective of the differences between UK and US living, while Toby Young (Brit) is another.

In brief however, America as a country whole dislikes Canada and France, but loves Britain (while thinking them a little snooty maybe) but almost always love the British accent.

Americans are perceived as more brash but I believe are actually more polite than Brits.

Both think themselves correct over the other on most issues

Tips & Warnings
