How to Clean a Microwave With Baking Soda

If you’ve ever approached your microwave armed with paper towels, spray cleaner, and the best intentions only to shudder and shut the door again, disheartened by the inch-thick crust of splattered tomato sauce, blasted baked beans, and petrified nacho cheese sauce, this is one article you will want to sit up and pay attention to. With just a few simple, cheap and environmentally friendly items you likely already have in your kitchen, your microwave will practically clean itself.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Shallow microwave-safe bowl or Pyrex pie plate
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp. baking soda
  • Clean sponge

Step1
Pour 2 cups water into a shallow microwave-safe bowl or Pyrex pie plate. Add 2 tbsp. baking soda and stir until dissolved.
Step2
Place bowl in the microwave, shut the door, and microwave on full power for 2 to 3 minutes.
Step3
Do not open the microwave door; let the baking soda and water mixture sit in microwave for at least four hours. (Overnight is okay too.)
Step4
After four (or more) hours, open microwave. Remove the bowl. Dampen a clean sponge in the now-cool baking soda and water mixture and squeeze out all excess water. Wipe down the interior of the microwave. The cooked-on food will come away easily. Use the baking soda and water mixture to rinse the sponge, and continue wiping until all food residue is gone.
Step5
Remove glass turntable if there is one in your microwave and wash with warm water and dish soap in the sink. Dry well and return to microwave. That’s it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your microwave has a serious personal hygiene issue, just repeat the process. No scrubbing needed.
  • Make sure to wring as much moisture as possible out of the sponge you use to wipe down the interior of your microwave.
