If you like to entertain often you know the cost can quickly catch up with you. Here's a few ideas to afford to entertain more often.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • food
  • drinks
  • friends

Step1
Ask friends to help. Politely request that since you are supplying and bulk of the food and the venue perhaps everyone could contribute something small. A bottle of wine or even a bag of pretzels can go a long way.
Step2
Choose a meal or a theme. Host a dessert party where you only serve candies and cakes. Or an appetizer party where you only serve soups and snacks. Theme parties are easier for everyone to bring something. It's much less overwhelming if someone hears, "Oh we're just having desserts, feel free to bring some cookies," when they ask what they can bring as opposed to, "Well Tammy's bringing baked ziti and Martha's bringing stuffed mushrooms so don't bring those," Besides more casual food makes for more casual guests and everyone will have a better time.
Step3
Stock up at the dollar store. It's not just for cheap kids toys. You can find a wide array of useful party items there. Look for paper cups and plates; as well as plastic utensils. Feel free to pick up some pretty wrapping paper and bows to use as table decorations.
Step4
Nothing perks up a room like some fresh flowers. Almost all grocery stores now carry small boquets of flowers for next to nothing. They have stunning colors and a wide variety of types. Pick up a few bunches and place them strategically around your house for a nice decorative touch.
Step5
Beverages are something that can totally blow your budget. So if you're doing alcohol stick with a signiture party drink so you don't have a buy a ton of different kinds of liquor. Other than that, plan your drinks with your theme. Dessert pary? Coffee and tea. Appetizers? Soda and water will be fine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you inform your guests if you only plan on serving snacks or desserts so they know to eat dinner before they come.
