How to Fire Your Boss

You've finally figured out that the boss isn't just having another "bad day" and is really nasty and inept. Common wisdom says you either put up with her or find a new job. But there are some steps you can take before accepting the usual.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Self-respect
  • Confidence

Step1
As soon as you reach your conclusion, start documenting specific instances that you feel are wrong. For instance, "(Date) Susan stood in my cube and called me stupid and lazy while others were around." Keep these records in a small notebook, not on the office computer.
Step2
Follow proper procedures. Speak to the boss privately about how he may be treating you unfairly. Keep it non-confrontational as much as possible. And don't react angrily if he takes off on you.
Step3
Because she probably treats everyone in her unit the same way, it's worthwhile to take your concerns to HR. Risky, perhaps, but remember you're trying to avoid having to make a bigger life decision—resigning.
Step4
If the company is large enough, look for a similar job in another department. Yes, your boss may be upset, but you need to act positively.
Step5
If all else fails and you have to leave, be candid but reasonable in your exit interview. It's possible other have left for the same reason and you could be helping those you leave behind.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some bosses actually lighten up if you show them you won't be abused.
  • If you must leave, you'll feel better if you take the high road.
  • Don't try to enlist others in your actions; it puts them in a bad spot and works against your goal of doing the right thing.
