How to Knit Staggered Eyelets

Once you have learned the basics of knitting, more diverse stitches can be mastered with a little time and practice. The staggered eyelets stitch is a beautiful variation that adds elegance to any project. This pattern works wonderfully in a sweater or scarf. Follow these steps.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Cast stitches in multiples of 4 stitches plus 3 stitches onto your knitting needles with your choice of yarn.

  2. Step 2

    Knit row 1 by using the stockinette stitch through to the end of the row. Remember to turn your work at the end of each row. Knit row 2 as the purl stitch to the end of the row.

  3. Step 3

    Knit row 3 as a repeating pattern of knit 2, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over. Repeat this pattern until there are 3 stitches left, then knit 3.

  4. Step 4

    Continue by knitting row 4 in the purl stitch to the end. Knit row 5 by using the stockinette stitch to the end. Carry on by knitting row 6 in the purl stitch to the end.

  5. Step 5

    Knit row 7 as a repeating pattern of knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, knit 2. Repeat this pattern until there are 3 stitches left; then knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, knit 1.

  6. Step 6

    Finish up by knitting row 8 in the purl stitch through to the end. Repeat these 8 rows to form the staggered eyelets pattern.

  • This pattern assumes a basic knowledge of casting on, stockinette and purl stitches and the ability to follow knitting instructions.
