How to Knit a King Charles Brocade

Once you have learned the basics of knitting, more diverse stitches can be mastered with a little time and practice. The King Charles Brocade is a beautiful variation that adds elegance to any project. The stitches may seem intimidating at first, go slowly and you'll soon be proud of your progress. This pattern works wonderfully in a sweater, scarf or a favorite sock pattern.

Instructions

1. Cast stitches in multiples of 12 stitches plus 1 stitch onto your knitting needles with your choice of yarn. Begin row 1 by knitting 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 9, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row. Remember to turn your work at the end of each row.

2. Knit row 2 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 7, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end.

3. Knit row 3 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end.

4. Carry on by knitting row 4 as purl 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 3, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 2. Repeat this pattern to the end.

5. Knit row 5 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of knit 2, (purl 1, knit 1) three times, purl 1, knit 3. Repeat this pattern to end.

6. Knit row 6 as purl 1, then a repeating pattern of knit 3, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 4. Repeat this pattern to the end.

7. Continue by knitting row 7 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of knit 4, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5. Repeat this pattern to the end.

8. Knit row 8 as purl 1, then a repeating pattern of knit 4, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 4. Repeat this pattern to the end.

9. Knit row 9 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of knit 2, (purl 1, knit 1) three times, purl 1, knit 3. Repeat this pattern to end.

10. Keep going in row 10 by purling 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 3, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 2. Repeat this pattern to the end.

11. Knit row 11 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end.

12. Finish up this pattern by knitting row 12 as knit 1, then a repeating pattern of purl 1, knit 1, purl 7, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end. Repeat these 12 rows to form the King Charles Brocade pattern.
