How to Form a Perfect Right Angle Using Just String

There are certain challenges in life that seem easy, but in fact aren't. Like the brain teaser on how to form a perfect right angle using just string. This is a great activity to teach children about angles (think geometry) as well as getting them to be resourceful in problem solving.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for an object that has a right angle within it. As you look around almost any room, you'll find them all over the place, such as the seat of a chair, the end of a table, the corner of the room, or a dollar bill. Any square object, and most rectangles in practical use, has four right angles, which are at each corner of the object.

    • 2

Lay the string along one side of the object. Stop laying the string at the corner of the object.

    • 3

Bend the string along the other end of the object. Because you are working with string, which tends to flop around easily, you may want to place a piece of tape on the corner where you are bending the string. This will keep it in place.

    • 4

Tighten each side of the string so that the place where the string changes directions comes to a perfect point and mimics the square object you are tracing. This completes your right angle using just string.
