Anyone who considers buying a computer has to decide between a Macintosh or a PC. The operating systems of both computers are very similar, making either excellent choices, but they each do certain tasks better than the other. The following steps will assist in making the decision easier.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how the computer will be used. If the computer will be used to play games, a PC is the overall winner. PCs offer an endless supply of games with unbelievable graphics. If the computer will be used mainly for surfing the Internet, Macintosh would be preferable. The Macintosh is resistant to most Internet viruses, spyware and adware.

  2. Step 2

Ascertain the level of competence of the main users. If the computer will be used by a novice, the Macintosh is very user friendly. There is very little the user can do to damage the workings of a Macintosh. There are a minimum of menus and it is nearly impossible to break into the main programming of the system. If the main users of the computer are programmers or like to adjust the multiple settings on the machine, a PC is the best choice.

  3. Step 3

Plan a budget. A Macintosh costs more and can only be bought through specific Apple outlets. PC's can be cheaper, some as little as $500, and can be purchased through many retailers.

  4. Step 4

Decide how long the computer will be used before buying the next model. Macintosh is easy to upgrade: just insert disc, press install and start using the new operating system. PC's have more problematic upgrades. Software may not work, paths will be lost or the blue screen of death may appear. Any of these will cause most PC users to call in a technician for help.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful if choosing to purchase a computer for bargain prices. The computers may be outdated or built out of sub-par components.
