How to Catch a Salamander

There are many of different species of salamanders. Salamanders are amphibians that have smooth, moist skin. Salamanders do some of their breathing through their soft skin, so most make their homes in damp environments. You can often find them living near water sources.

1. Look in all of the places that salamanders like to hide to see if you can catch one. When on land, most salamanders like to spend their time under rocks, logs and decaying leaves.
2. Create a perfect environment hiding place and trap a salamander. Dig a small hole in the ground, sink a bowl or a container in the hole and put some water in it. Put a plastic bag over the hole and carefully cover the bag and the hole with a light layer of dirt. Wait for your hiding place to catch salamanders for you.
3. Wear gloves when picking up a salamander. Salamanders have thin, delicate skin that be injured and damaged by the oils in our hands. Do not touch the salamander without putting on clean gloves first.
4. Handle the salamander gently. Never squeeze your fingers when picking up a salamander. It is very delicate and can be injured or killed easily. Do not hold the salamander for long. Either put it into the aquarium if you are keeping it or release it quickly.
5. Research the habitat, feeding habits and care of the species of salamander that you catch if you intend to keep them as pets or hold them for any length of time.

• Some salamanders are endangered species and have laws protecting them. Check with local and federal laws to find out if is legal to catch and keep salamanders where you live.
