How to Catch a Greased Pig

At county fairs across the country, kids line up to take part in the greased pig contest. Most fairs use young pigs, but it doesn't take long to see how hard it is even for the most athletic kids to catch themselves a porker.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Sprint to the closest pig you can find and approach it from behind.
Step2
Reach out for the pig's hind legs when you are close enough to get a firm grip on both legs at the same time.
Step3
Hold on tight to the pig's back legs until the squirming slows down.
Step4
Run to the closest pen and secure your pig.
Step5
Take home the bacon. Some contests offer cash prizes or even the pig itself. If you know beforehand that the pig will be the prize, be sure to bring a crate to carry it home if you win. Once at home, you just learn how to take care of it. Call your local extension agent for tips or read a book about raising pigs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't try to pen down the pig by falling on top of it. You will only end up "riding" it this way. It's hilarious for others to watch, but not effective.
  • Be a good sport and don't push anyone out of the way. Greased pig contests are meant for fun and being pushed by someone is not fun.
  • Be prepared to get dirty. A combination of dirt, lard, and that wonderful pig smell will become part of your wardrobe.
  • Never enter a greased pig contest if the prize is the pig and you do not have a place to raise it. Make plans beforehand for the pig to go to a good home if you are a winner.
